ECOWAS Don Start Withdrawal Process for Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso

Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) don accept say Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso go comot as member states from January 29, 2025.

ECOWAS Commission President, Dr. Omar Touray, announce di tori for di end of di 66th Ordinary Session of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government. E confirm say di three countries notify ECOWAS about their withdrawal and outline di process and timeline for di withdrawal, based on Article 91 of di revised ECOWAS Treaty. ECOWAS give di transition period six months, wey go end for July 2025.

Our correspondent, Raliat Adenekan, report say di Authority mandate President Faure Gnassingbé of Togo and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal to mediate with di three countries until di transition period end. Di Commission go also prepare backup plan for political and economic relations with di countries.

For di closing ceremony, ECOWAS Chairman, President Bola Tinubu, tell member states to intensify effort to turn meeting decisions into benefits for di region.

Tinubu hail di outgoing African Union Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, during im valedictory session. E also praise Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, wey e call “Mr. Democrat,” and wish am success.
