Tinubu Don Order Stronger Engineering Rules To Stop Building Collapse, Road Failures

President Bola Tinubu don direct the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) make dem tighten engineering regulations, enforce standards well-well and punish engineers wey no follow professional rules, as government dey find way stop constant infrastructure failures across the country.

Tinubu, wey Minister of Works David Umahi represent for the 34th Engineering Assembly of COREN for Abuja on Tuesday, talk say Nigeria no fit continue to lose lives, properties and public money because of engineering mistakes wey fit avoid.

According to the President, engineering no be only about building roads, bridges and houses, but also about protecting the lives of Nigerians wey dey use those facilities every day.

“No road, bridge or building get more value pass human life,” Tinubu talk.

The President explain say engineering failures dey cause deaths, destruction of property, waste government investments and reduce public confidence in infrastructure. Because of this, regulation must move from reacting after disasters happen to preventing them before dem occur.

Tinubu say COREN get important responsibility to protect Nigerians from poor-quality engineering work and make sure professionals dey accountable for their actions.

He also stress say regulation no be punishment but protection for citizens, investors, government and businesses.

The President reaffirm Federal Government commitment to quality infrastructure under the Renewed Hope Agenda, adding say current road projects across Nigeria dey designed to last between 50 and 100 years, unlike many old projects wey spoil within few years.

Meanwhile, Minister of Works David Umahi warn site engineers make dem no allow contractors dictate engineering decisions.

According to Umahi, engineering mistakes fit lead to irreversible tragedies because once structures collapse, lives fit be lost.

“Engineering na one profession where mistake fit cost human lives,” Umahi warn.

COREN President, Prof. Sadiq Abubakar, also call for stronger regulation and proactive monitoring to identify risks before infrastructure fail.

He reveal say the council don increase inspections on projects nationwide, improve digital registration systems and strengthen enforcement against unsafe engineering practices.

Also speaking, President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, through the company Chief Economist, Prof. Hassan Mahmoud, say quality engineering and strict compliance with standards remain critical for Nigeria’s industrial growth and economic development.
