Nigeria’s U-17 football team, go miss the upcoming U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco

February 7, 2025

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets won’t play in the expanded 2025 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. Although they finished third at last year’s WAFU B U-17 Championship in Ghana, they failed to qualify after Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso secured the automatic spots for the region.

The 2025 U-17 AFCON, scheduled for March 30 to April 19, 2025, will also serve as a qualifier for the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar in November – a tournament Nigeria has won five times, but they will miss for the second consecutive time.

The Confederation of African Football awarded four spots in the expanded tournament to Gambia, who finished third at the WAFU Zone A qualifiers, Tunisia, and two countries from the CECAFA and COSAFA regions.

The two remaining spots for the 16-team tournament will go to the top two teams from the UNIFFAC region qualifiers, which include Cameroon, Gabon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Congo Brazaville.
