The old anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” bin dey replaced with the current one, “Arise, O Compatriots,” in 1978 during the Olusegun Obasanjo regime.

Our correspondent, Raliat Adenekan, report say the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, wey sponsor the bill, explain say the old anthem contribute immensely to the national identity and unity of Nigerians pass the existing anthem.

The lawmakers talk say the current national anthem na product of the military junta, and therefore e suppose dey discarded to adequately capture the nation’s democratic values, integrity, and mainly foster commitment to nationhood.

After rigorous debate, Senate President Godswil Akpabio refer the proposed bill to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to report back for further legislative input.
