US President Joe Biden don change the death sentences of 37 out of 40 federal death row inmates to life imprisonment without parole.
The inmates wey get their sentences changed include nine people convicted of killing fellow prisoners, four for murders during bank robberies, and one person who killed a prison guard.
However, three men — Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (who helped carry out the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing), Dylann Roof (the white supremacist who killed nine Black churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015), and Robert Bowers (who killed 11 Jews at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue in 2018) — didn’t benefit from this decision.
This action comes as former President Donald Trump prepares to return to power. He has said he will restart federal executions after ending a 17-year pause in 2020 during his first term. During his last six months in office, 13 people were executed by lethal injection — the highest number under any US president in 120 years.
