US President Joe Biden awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to 19 people from politics, culture, and the arts. Among those who received the award were former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, designer Ralph Lauren, U2 frontman Bono, and philanthropist George Soros.
According to the White House, they present the medal to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public, or private endeavors.
Two prominent American political figures received the honor posthumously: former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and former Michigan Gov. George Romney, the father of former Senator Mitt Romney.
In entertainment, actors Michael J. Fox and Denzel Washington, along with retired NBA star Earvin “Magic” Johnson, also received the award.
Football legend Lionel Messi did not attend the ceremony. The White House explained that scheduling conflicts prevented him from attending, but he still received the award.
