Labour unions don plan to picket NERC and DisCos nationwide sake of electricity tariff hike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) don talk say dem go protest for the offices of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and distribution companies (DisCos) for di whole country on Monday.

Dis decision happen afta di labor unions bin give Sunday as di deadline for government to reverse di tariff increase wey dem don put for electricity. As e be, dis Sunday deadline no bring any results.

Di increase for tariff dey affect people wey dey enjoy minimum of 20 hours of light everyday. Even as NERC don review di tariff, di labor unions still dey hold ground, dey talk say dem no happy with di current increase.

Dis action don cause plenty talk as different people dey share dia mind on top di mata, especially as di kontri inflation dey high and government don remove petroleum subsidy.

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) don yan say di Federal Government dey use di tariff increase take boost di money wey DisCos dey get.

But di Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, don come out talk say di Federal Government dey plan to subsidize electricity cost by about N1.8 trillion for 2024. E still talk say di Electricity Act of 2023 dey allow for tariff reviews every six months, so e mean say di recent increase wey happun dey within di law.
