ECOWAS don lift sanctions on Niger based on humanitarian reasons

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) don decide to lift the travel, commercial, and targeted economic sanctions wey dem put on Niger to try reverse the coup wey happen for the country last year.

The ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Alieu Touray, read the communiqué after the extraordinary summit wey happen on Saturday for Abuja, wey talk about peace, politics, and security for the ECOWAS sub-region.

Touray talk say the no-fly zone, border closures, and asset freezes, wey dem impose on Niger, don stop “with immediate effect” based on humanitarian grounds.

E talk say ECOWAS also decide to lift sanctions on the recruitment of Malian citizens for ECOWAS positions and financial and economic sanctions on the Republic of Guinea.

The concern wey dem get about the socio-economic effects of Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, and Guinea withdrawing from ECOWAS make Mr. Touray talk say the Commission don direct am to invite the countries to come attend the technical and consultative meetings of ECOWAS and all security-related meetings.
