Albania don ban TikTok for one year after the killing of a teenager

December 23, 2024

Albania has announced a one-year ban on TikTok following the killing of a teenager last month, which raised concerns about the impact of social media on children.

Prime Minister Edi Rama said after meeting with parents’ groups and teachers from across the country that the ban, part of a broader plan to make schools safer, will start early next year.

The government made this decision after a 14-year-old schoolboy got stabbed to death in November by a fellow student. Local media reported that the incident followed arguments between the two boys on social media. Videos also surfaced on TikTok, where minors supported the killing.

Several European countries, including France, Germany, and Belgium, have imposed restrictions on social media use for children. Recently, Australia also approved a complete social media ban for children under 16.
