The family of the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, has rejected former military President Gen. Ibrahim Babangida’s claim that the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election was Gen. Abacha’s responsibility.
Mohammed, the son of Abacha, stated yesterday that Babangida missed the opportunity to provide a truthful and objective account of past events in his autobiography, “A Journey in Service.”
The family clarified that Gen. Abacha was neither the Head of State nor the Commander-in-Chief when the June 12 election was annulled. They emphasized that Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, as Head of State at the time, held absolute executive powers and made the decision to annul the election.
The family argued that any attempt to shift the blame onto Gen. Abacha, a senior military officer in the regime, deliberately distorts historical facts.
