Nigerian Senate don pass amendment bill for Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) law wey propose ₦50,000 fine for anybody wey dey hawk, trade or preach inside commercial buses and other public transport vehicles.
The bill, wey still dey wait for President Bola Tinubu assent before e become law, also introduce tougher punishment for several traffic offences across the country.
Under the new proposal, anybody wey police or authorities convict for hawking, selling market or preaching inside commercial vehicle go pay ₦50,000 fine.
Lawmakers say dem introduce the rule to reduce distractions inside buses and improve passenger safety on Nigerian roads.
The amendment also increase punishment for motorists wey drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Instead of the former ₦5,000 fine, offenders now fit pay ₦100,000 fine, face up to two years imprisonment, or both.
Drivers wey refuse to cooperate with FRSC officials during roadside alcohol tests based on reasonable suspicion go also face ₦50,000 fine, six months jail term, or both.
The Senate further raise penalties for disobeying traffic lights, road signs and other traffic control devices to ₦100,000.
Speed limit offenders and reckless drivers no escape the tougher sanctions, as both offences now carry ₦100,000 fine, while reckless driving fit also attract up to two years imprisonment.
According to the lawmakers, the amended bill contains 52 traffic offences and their penalties.
The Senate say the aim of the review na to strengthen FRSC enforcement powers, improve obedience to traffic laws and reduce road accidents across Nigeria.
If President Tinubu signs the bill into law, Nigerians wey break any of the listed traffic rules go face the new penalties.
