Six people have died from a Marburg virus outbreak in Rwanda. The country’s health minister, Sabin Nsanzimana, reported that most of the victims were healthcare workers in an intensive care unit at a hospital in the capital, Kigali.
Marburg, which has a fatality rate of up to 88%, belongs to the same virus family as Ebola. It spreads to humans from fruit bats and through contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals. Symptoms include fever, muscle pains, diarrhea, vomiting, and in severe cases, death from extreme blood loss.
Currently, there are no specific treatments or vaccines for the virus, but a range of blood products, drugs, and immune therapies are under development, according to the World Health Organization. This marks the first confirmed case of Marburg in Rwanda. Neighboring Tanzania reported an outbreak in 2023, while three people died in Uganda in 2017.
