Minister of Works, David Umahi, don finally break silence over the death of Miss Mary Habila, the nurse wey die for one guest house linked to the Ministry of Works for Uburu, Ebonyi State.
Umahi talk say the late Mary no be ordinary staff to am, as she be “like daughter” to am and him family. E also reject allegations wey dey fly around social media, saying there be no evidence of foul play and that some people dey use the young woman’s death play politics.
Speaking during a press conference for Abuja on Thursday, the minister explain say Mary work closely with am for about three years and even dey battle health challenges wey he personally pay for her treatment.
According to Umahi, the deceased na nurse for the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ebonyi State, and not physiotherapist as some reports claim.
“The girl be like daughter to me. She stay with me for three years. Her family and my family na one,” Umahi talk.
The minister reveal say he spend about N2.2 million for her treatment at a Turkish hospital earlier this year and say all the medical records dey available.
Umahi also narrate wetin he describe as Mary’s final moments before she die.
According to am, shortly before her death, she call her boyfriend and complain say blood dey come out from her nose. The boyfriend reportedly advise her to seek medical attention, but communication later stop.
Umahi say after the boyfriend end the call and try to call back minutes later, Mary no answer again.
He add say she also tell her boyfriend say she wan enter bathroom before communication suddenly end.
When people begin suspect say something no dey right, dem break the room door and discover her body inside, while water still dey run from the tap.
The minister insist say the guest house where the incident happen dey far from his personal residence and say e no make sense for people to blame am simply because the death happen inside government facility.
“Everything for this country don turn opportunity for politics. Because person die for Ministry of Works guest house no mean say minister get hand for am,” he say.
Umahi describe the death as painful and say Mary na one of his most hardworking staff members.
He also beg the family of the deceased make dem allow police carry out autopsy to determine the real cause of death.
According to him, the family don object to the procedure because of cultural beliefs, but he don direct say the corpse no go leave mortuary until autopsy is done.
The minister reveal say he don ask the Inspector-General of Police to transfer the investigation to Abuja to ensure proper probe and discussions with the family.
Umahi also claim say Mary don experience nosebleeding before during official trips, including one incident for Lagos, and urge investigators to check phone records between her and her boyfriend to help uncover what really happened.
While police investigation still dey continue, the minister maintain say he never see any sign of criminal activity surrounding the death.
He also threaten legal action against media organisations and individuals wey he accuse of spreading false information and cyberbullying the late nurse.
Meanwhile, the death of Mary Habila continue to generate public attention, with many Nigerians calling for a thorough and transparent investigation to establish the exact cause of her death.
