According to Onanuga, plenty people dey quote only part of wetin Tinubu talk before the 2023 election and leave the full context. E explain say Tinubu no make direct promise say e go abandon re-election if light no better. Instead, the President talk say if e no fit provide steady electricity, Nigerians suppose understand the serious problems wey im government inherit for the power sector.
Onanuga talk this one during interview for Arise News on Tuesday. E say Tinubu don show commitment to reform the power sector since e enter office, especially through the signing of the Electricity Act, wey give states power to generate, transmit and distribute electricity on their own.
E also point to government efforts to reduce estimated billing and increase meter distribution across the country. According to am, the government dey work with distribution companies to make sure more Nigerians get meters without extra burden.
Although Onanuga admit say electricity supply never reach the level wey Tinubu promise, e blame the challenge on long-standing problems like gas shortage, huge debts owed to gas suppliers, and old transmission infrastructure.
E reveal say Nigeria get installed power generation capacity of about 13,500 megawatts, but issues like lack of gas, over N4 trillion legacy debt, and weak national grid dey stop the sector from performing well.
Despite the challenges, Onanuga insist say Tinubu government still dey work hard to improve electricity supply and strengthen the power sector across the country.
