The UK government’s Rwanda asylum policy, aimed at addressing small boat issues, is facing disarray as the country’s highest court ruled it unlawful. The Supreme Court supported a Court of Appeal decision, stating that the policy exposes individuals sent to Rwanda to potential human rights violations. With £140m already spent, the policy cannot be implemented in its current form. Despite this setback, Rishi Sunak has indicated a determination to pursue the plan, outlining measures to revive it. The contentious proposal to fly asylum seekers to Rwanda and bar their return to the UK has been under legal scrutiny since Boris Johnson announced it in April 2022.
