Plenty people don dey vex say many students fail this year SSCE exam, especially for English Language and Mathematics. Parents and some education groups dey shout make WAEC cancel some papers, especially English, and do another one.
Di National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) talk say di way dem do exam for night no make sense at all and e affect students performance.
Only 38.32% of candidates pass English and Maths with credit, and these two subjects na key to enter university.
Concerned Parents and Educators Network (CPE) talk say WAEC mess up, especially as some students write English exam for night, under rain, with torchlight, dey fight mosquito. One person for di group, Adegoke Bimpe Atoke, talk say di system need urgent reform, say she no fit chop again because of wetin happen.
Another person, Abiodun Adesanya Adeleke, talk say English paper suppose be cancelled and done again. He say students dey write exam till 9pm inside mosquito-infested classroom, how dat one be standard exam?
Adebayo Ifeoluwa, wey be teacher for Lagos, talk say for him school, exam start and end on time. He ask who go take blame for di wahala.
Rex Oscar talk say e no fit believe say over 70% of SS3 students no read. Even students wey do well for JAMB still fail English. He say government gatz do investigation.
Adetoun Aremu suggest say make students rewrite English and Maths. Ifeoma Eucharia talk say even with all di stress wey students face, dem still fail English.
WAEC try do some things to stop exam malpractice, especially for objective questions. Dem use one method wey dem call “serialisation”, na di same questions dem give everybody, but di question numbers no be di same. So question 1 for one person fit be question 20 for another. That way, people no fit copy each other. But many students still no do well for di objective part.
Di National President of National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN), Haruna Danjuma, talk say exam malpractice don reduce small, but that one no be di only problem. He ask whether we get enough teachers wey sabi teach well. Many states never employ new teachers to replace di ones wey don leave.
He still talk say some parents no fit buy textbook for their children because book don cost. Schools need better equipment and teachers need better pay. If teacher dey worry about food and basic needs, how e go teach well? Parents too need show more interest for their children education.
WAEC release result on Monday. Out of 1,969,313 candidates wey write exam, only 754,545 na just 38.32% get credit and above for five subjects including English and Maths. Last year, 72.12% pass like that. So this year performance drop well well.
