Namibia’s founding president, Sam Nujoma, who led the country to freedom from apartheid South Africa, was laid to rest in the Heroes Acre cemetery at the weekend.

His widow, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and African leaders, both past and present, attended the ceremony. They all described Nujoma as an African icon and a man of strong principles who stood up to colonial systems.

Nujoma served three terms as president from 1990 to 2005. He died two weeks ago at age 95 and earned widespread praise for bringing peace and stability to Namibia.

The country observed 21 days of mourning, with flags at half-staff. As people lowered his casket, draped in the Namibian flag, they fired a 21-gun salute and held a flypast by the Namibian Air Force.
