Federal Government don raise fresh alarm say serious flood fit hit 17 states across Nigeria within the next seven days as river water levels continue to rise.
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) issue the warning in its latest flood advisory, saying communities near rivers and floodplains fit experience flooding between July 21 and July 27, 2026.
According to NIHSA Director-General, Umar Mohammed, several river monitoring stations don record dangerous increases in water levels, making flooding more likely in affected areas.
The 17 states wey dey under flood alert include, Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara.
Mohammed explain say water levels for Saminaka on Karam River, Waya Dam site on Waya River and Amber River don pass warning levels, while 16 monitoring stations nationwide dey record unusually high water levels.
He urge state governments, local authorities and residents wey dey flood-prone communities make dem quickly take precautionary measures before the situation worsen.
According to NIHSA, Bauchi State get the highest risk exposure with 1,841 vulnerable communities, 145 schools, 101 health facilities, and markets.
Other states like Edo, Imo, Kaduna, Plateau and Benue also get several communities and public facilities wey fit suffer if flood happen.
The agency advise emergency agencies and community leaders make dem activate emergency response plans immediately.
Dem also recommend say residents move themselves, their animals and valuable property comot from flood-prone areas go safer locations.
NIHSA further urge emergency agencies make dem stock food supplies, medicine and water treatment materials ahead of any possible disaster.
The agency warn Nigerians not to drive, walk or ride through flooded roads, bridges or fast-flowing rivers.
Authorities also receive instruction to clear blocked drainage systems, culverts and waterways to reduce the chances of severe flooding.
This latest warning come just days after NIHSA issue another flood alert for 14 states, while the Federal Ministry of Environment earlier warn say 26 states and the FCT fit experience flooding because of heavy rainfall this rainy season.
Residents for affected areas don receive advice to stay alert, monitor official weather updates and relocate if necessary to protect lives and property.
