As dem dey prepare for di second Africa Climate Summit, ACS2, wey go happen from September 8–10 for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with di theme “Accelerating Global Climate Solutions: Financing for Africa’s Resilient and Green Development”, AU Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment, Moses Vilakati, talk say lack of money still be big wahala wey dey stop Africa from strong climate resilience.
Him talk say even though Africa dey contribute small to global greenhouse gas emissions, na Africa dey suffer pass from climate change because of where e dey, weak ability to adapt and economic wahala.
Vilakati talk say AU don make progress since di first climate summit by working close with regional institutions and pushing joint efforts on climate policy.
Him talk say: “Africa need over $3 trillion to take meet im climate goals, but e only receive $30 billion between 2021 and 2022. We gatz create better environment wey go allow efficiency, enough money, and fairness for climate financing.”
Him talk say only 18 percent of Africa mitigation needs don get money, and just 20 percent of adaptation financing don dey covered.
As e dey refer to di first summit goal to triple renewable energy capacity reach 300 GW by 2030, e call for stronger collaboration between governments, private investors and international organisations.
“Africa get di highest solar potential for di world, with plenty areas wey dey receive over 2,000 kWh/m² every year,” him talk, as e stress say Africa need fair and just energy transition.
“Climate change, and wetin we go do about am, go define our time, our continent, and di global legacy wey we go leave for future generations,” Vilakati talk.
Him add say ACS2 go help push climate policies, promote sustainable industries, and include climate risks inside development plans, as e confirm AU commitment to rotate di summit host country to promote inclusiveness.
Ethiopia State Minister for Planning and Development, Seyoum Mekonnen, also talk say di summit go show African solutions and call for better global climate financing.
As e dey describe di event as “Africa’s COP,” Mekonnen talk say: “This summit no be just another event, na Africa time to lead. Africa dey always look like victim of climate change, but we also be continent wey get solutions.”
Him talk say di summit go promote African-led climate actions and demand change for di global financial system to support innovation and sustainability.
Mekonnen point to Ethiopia progress under Green Legacy Initiative, wey don plant over 40 billion seedlings in six years, wey boost forest cover from 17.2 percent in 2019 to 23.6 percent in 2023.
“We no just dey host summit, we dey build movement. And every movement need voices wey go amplify, challenge and inform,” him talk.
