Di Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, don firmly dismiss rumors wey dey suggest say di Federal Government dey plan to sell public universities to private investors.
Dis clarification come during di Second Quarterly Engagement meeting of di ministry with heads of units and chief executive officers of parastatals and agencies under di ministry.
Di Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) don previously raise concerns, accuse di Federal Government say dem dey plan to transfer control of federal universities to private investors through public-private partnerships.
Addressing these concerns, Prof. Mamman categorically state, “There is no plan to sell off universities to investors.”
Prof. Mamman elaborate on di government’s stance, highlight di policy of transnational education. He explain say dis policy aim to open up di Nigerian tertiary education system to international participation.
“Transnational education na policy on wetin dis government dey do to open up tertiary education by taking people from di rest of di world to come and invest in our tertiary system,” he talk.
He further clarify say dis initiative na to attract international educational institutions to establish presence for Nigeria, either independently or in collaboration with local universities.
“Dis no be to sell our institutions,” Mamman emphasize, noting say di guidelines on transnational education don dey in place for some time.
Drawing comparisons to other regions, di minister note say countries for Asia don benefit greatly from allowing international universities to operate within their borders.
“In other parts of di world, like Asia, dem don benefit immensely from having international institutions for those countries,” Mamman remark, indicating say Nigeria fit also reap similar advantages.
Di meeting also serve as platform for di ministry to review di progress and challenges within di education sector, reaffirming their commitment to enhance di educational landscape for Nigeria.
Prof. Mamman stress di importance of continuous engagement with heads of agencies and parastatals to ensure effective implementation of educational policies and initiatives.
